Renegade Running hosted its first Oakland 5000 race at Laney College on July 16.

Over 200 athletes from California, including more than 100 from Oakland, registered to compete in the 5000 meter race.

Andrew Catanese, 30–34, nonbinary, came in first with a time of 15:10. Presnell Tucker of Oakland in the 15-19 male division finished with 15:17. Brandon Abasolo of Oakland, male, 30-34, came in third with a time of 15:38.

An Olympic-length event, 5000 meters is a little over three miles, or about 12 and a half laps around the Laney track. Seventy runners completed the run in under 20 minutes, which is about a 6 minute and 25 seconds per mile pace.

Three participants, including Catanese, identified themselves as non-binary at registration.

Renegade Running, a retail shoe and sports apparel store located on Grand Ave, sponsored the race. The event raised a little over $1,000 in donations for the 3M Track Club, an Oakland-based track and field mentoring program for children ages 7-18.
