Oakland Voices is committed to accuracy, fairness and transparency. When we make a material error, we correct it and explain the change clearly.
Report a possible error
Use our corrections form to report a possible factual error, missing context or other concern about a published story.
Please include:
- your name and contact information;
- a link to the story;
- the information you believe is inaccurate or incomplete; and
- any records or sources that support your request.

We review requests as promptly as our capacity allows. Submitting a request does not guarantee that a story will be changed, but we will consider the information provided and conduct additional reporting when necessary.
How we label changes
Routine edits
We may correct typographical errors, formatting problems, broken links or other mistakes that do not change a story’s meaning without adding a note.
Corrections
When an error materially affects a reader’s understanding of a story, we will correct the information and add a correction note explaining what was wrong and what has been changed.
Material corrections will generally appear prominently near the beginning of the story. The story’s update timestamp may also change.
Clarifications
We use a clarification when published information is factually accurate but additional wording or context is necessary to prevent misunderstanding.
Updates
We may update a developing story when new, newsworthy information becomes available. An update note will describe the material information added after publication.
Editor’s notes
An editor’s note may explain an editorial decision, disclose relevant circumstances, or provide information that does not fall into the categories above.
We do not use “clarification,” “update” or “editor’s note” as a substitute for acknowledging a factual error.
Responses and requests to add a statement
People and organizations mentioned in our reporting may request that we review additional information or add a response. Oakland Voices will consider whether the information improves the story’s accuracy, fairness, or completeness.
We do not guarantee that every submitted statement will be published, and sources do not have the right to approve or edit our coverage.
Requests to remove or modify published information
Oakland Voices generally does not remove accurate published journalism solely because it later becomes inconvenient or unfavorable.
We will consider requests to remove, anonymize or modify information when continued publication may cause disproportionate harm. Relevant considerations may include:
- threats to a person’s safety;
- the involvement of a child or vulnerable person;
- expungement or other significant changes in a legal record;
- the age and continuing public value of the information;
- whether the person was a private individual or public official;
- whether Oakland Voices identified the person independently or the person voluntarily sought publicity; and
- whether another remedy, such as an update or follow-up story, would better serve readers.
Decisions are made case by case. Removing a page from search-engine results is different from deleting it from Oakland Voices’ archive, and we may consider those options separately.
Social media
When a material error has been distributed through an Oakland Voices social account, we will correct or replace the post when practical. We may preserve the original post when doing so is necessary for transparency.
