History and Mission

Established in 2010, Oakland Voices is a nine-month community journalism program, formed by a partnership between the Oakland Tribune and the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, a nonprofit dedicated to dismantling systemic racism in news and building institutions of belonging. Correspondents use their voice to highlight the triumphs and challenges of life in Oakland, California. No previous media experience required. Join Oakland Voices and donate today!
