Editor’s Note: As part of Oakland Voices’ June 2 primary election coverage, we’re featuring the latest installment of “Real Talk About the Town,” a voter education series produced by the Brotherhood of Elders Network and hosted by Oakland Voices alum Saleem Gilmore.

Oakland Voices alum Dr. Saleem Gilmore hosts the conversation, which includes an interview with Congresswoman Lateefah Simon. The first episode also features Randy Serigushi, Jr. speaking with Oakland residents.

The series creates space for candid community conversations about issues shaping Oakland, including affordable housing, community-centered public safety, and police accountability. At a moment when many voters feel disconnected or skeptical about democracy, the series aims to provide information and dialogue that can support informed participation.

Watch the first episode below, and visit Brotherhood of Elders Network’s channel for the series.
