More than 11,000 runners took to the streets of the Town for the 17th Oakland Marathon on March 22. The race was the largest in the history of the event, according to event organizers.

The race began near the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts and wound through the neighborhoods of Eastlake, Grand Lake, Downtown, and Jack London Square. The race featured a loop out and across the eastern span of the Bay Bridge, before heading back to finish near Lake Merritt.

In addition to the 26.2 mile marathon, participants competed in a half marathon, 10K, 5K and youth races, with roughly 25,000 people attending race weekend events, organizers said.

Mitchell Larrieta Angeles, 19, was the first Oaklander to complete the marathon. Magda Boulet, 53, came in fifth and was the first female Oaklander to finish the marathon.

Race weekend also included community events around Lake Merritt and a public festival celebrating runners and spectators. Organizers said the event raised $150,000 in support of the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation.
