Amid whoops and cheers and a cacophony of car horns, Oaklanders came out to celebrate the election victory of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the Grand Ave and Lakeshore Ave area and around Lake Merritt.
Americans historically elected the first woman, Black, and Asian Vice President. Kamala Harris was born in Oakland and launched her bid for the presidency in Oakland in 2019.
Car caravans created traffic jams but unfazed celebrants flashed signs and waved from sunroofs. Some banged pots and pans together. Motorcyclists zoomed down the avenues flashing pride flags. On the street, people opened bottles of champagne, toasted each other, and danced to music on boom boxes. Everyone wore a face mask. And a jubilant good time was had by all.
