Comments Policy
Oakland Voices welcomes community knowledge, questions, experiences, and criticism. Thoughtful comments can help residents understand one another, identify overlooked information, and suggest directions for additional reporting.
We moderate the conversations we host so that disagreement can be vigorous without becoming abusive, unsafe, disrespectful, or detached from the subject under discussion.
Where comments are available
Oakland Voices may open comments on selected stories. We may close comments when we cannot moderate them responsibly or when the subject presents heightened concerns involving safety, privacy, children, trauma, active legal matters, or targeted harassment.
Comments generally close 90 days after publication, although Oakland Voices may close or reopen a discussion earlier or later.
Because Oakland Voices has limited staff capacity, comments may not be reviewed immediately. Submission does not guarantee publication or an individual response.
What we welcome
We welcome comments that:
- respond directly to the story or question;
- add relevant experience, context or firsthand knowledge;
- ask good-faith questions;
- respectfully challenge our reporting or another commenter’s argument;
- identify a possible error or omission;
- suggest follow-up reporting; or
- offer a clear opinion about an issue discussed in the story.
You may criticize Oakland Voices, public officials, institutions, political parties, policies and ideas. We do not remove comments merely because they are critical, unpopular or expressed from a particular political perspective.
What we will not publish
Oakland Voices may decline or remove comments containing:
- threats, harassment, intimidation or encouragement of violence;
- attacks directed at another person rather than their actions or ideas;
- racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, or other degrading attacks on a protected or historically targeted or marginalized group;
- slurs or dehumanizing descriptions;
- unsupported accusations that an identifiable person committed a crime or engaged in serious misconduct;
- information that is demonstrably false or materially misleading;
- personal contact information, private records, or other sensitive information about the commenter or another person;
- content that could endanger a child, survivor, vulnerable person, or private individual;
- impersonation or misrepresentation of identity or affiliation;
- spam, repetitive posts, commercial promotion or unrelated links;
- comments unrelated to the story;
- content that is so unclear that its meaning cannot reasonably be understood;
- profanity or graphic content that does not serve a clear journalistic purpose; or
- material that violates the law or another person’s rights.
We consider context, not merely individual words. Strong language, anger, and criticism are not automatically violations.
Allegations and disputed claims
A comment section is not an appropriate place to introduce an unsupported accusation of criminal conduct or serious wrongdoing against an identifiable person.
If a comment contains a potentially newsworthy allegation, Oakland Voices may withhold the comment while reviewing the information as a tip, correction request, or editorial complaint. We may contact the commenter for records or additional information.
Withholding the public comment does not mean Oakland Voices has dismissed the concern.
Corrections and complaints
If you believe an Oakland Voices story contains a factual error, use our corrections form so the concern reaches an editor and can be reviewed appropriately.
Comments requesting a correction may be routed into our correction process rather than published. Any resulting correction, clarification or editor’s note will be handled under our Corrections and Editorial Updates Policy.
Requests for assistance and private messages
Please do not use the comment section to request personal assistance, contact someone named in a story or share sensitive information about benefits, immigration status, health, housing, legal problems or family circumstances.
We will ordinarily withhold these comments to protect the person’s privacy. When possible, we may respond privately with an appropriate contact or resource, but Oakland Voices cannot guarantee individual assistance.
Editing and moderation
Comments may be reviewed before appearing publicly.
Oakland Voices generally does not substantively edit reader comments. We may correct minor formatting problems or remove an accidental duplicate, but we will not rewrite a comment in a way that changes its meaning. When a potentially valuable comment contains a correctable problem, we may invite the commenter to revise and resubmit it.
We may remove a previously published comment if we later learn that it violates this policy or creates an unanticipated safety or privacy concern.
Participation and repeated violations
Commenters do not have to agree with Oakland Voices or with one another. They must follow these standards.
Oakland Voices may restrict participation by people who repeatedly violate this policy, evade moderation decisions, impersonate others or target members of the community.
Attempts to repost a declined comment do not require Oakland Voices to publish it or provide additional responses.
Social media
These principles also guide moderation on Oakland Voices’ social media accounts. We may hide, delete, report or restrict comments or accounts under the tools and rules available on each platform.
We cannot control comments posted on accounts or pages that Oakland Voices does not manage.
Editorial independence and endorsement
Reader comments represent the views of their authors, not Oakland Voices, the Maynard Institute, our contributors or our funders.
Publishing a comment does not mean Oakland Voices has independently verified or endorsed every opinion it contains. Oakland Voices may nevertheless decline comments that make consequential factual allegations without adequate support.
Questions about moderation
Questions about a moderation decision may be emailed to [email address] with a link to the story and the name or email used to submit the comment.
We may reconsider a decision, but we cannot guarantee an individual response or extended correspondence about every moderated comment.
Oakland Voices may update this policy as our publishing tools, staffing and community needs change. Material revisions will be identified by the review date below.
