Accuracy is an important principle of journalism and important to Oakland Voices.
Oakland Voices corrects significant errors brought to our attention. Corrections of errors will be made on our website and social media accounts. To report an error, please use our corrections form.
Updating stories
Oakland Voices will immediately fix errors, including misspellings or incorrect titles of people. We only include a note that a story has been updated if there is a reason to add new information or make a change. We include a timestamp of that last time a story was updated.
Stories with significant errors will include a correction appended to the story. Significant errors will be appended at the top of a story, with minor corrections, clarifications, and notes at the bottom of a story.
If you would like to write a response to a story, or to request that a statement be added to a story, please contact the correspondent directly or you may contact an editor using the email addresses available on our staff page.
Corrections and clarifications
We acknowledge material errors with straightforward corrections. We will correct any error that will impact how our audience understands a story. Corrections require that we acknowledge and correct an error. The text will identify the error, provide correct information, and may attribute or explain how an error occurred (e.g. source, correspondent, or editor).
In instances where editing oversight is not a factual error, but context has been omitted, for example, we will use labels like “Editor’s Note” and “Clarification.” These are not euphemisms. If new details or clarifications are added to a story after its publication, our practice is to include a note describing the update at the end of the piece.
If you would like to write a response to a story, or to request that a statement be added to a story, you may contact an editor using the email addresses available on our staff page.
“Unpublishing” stories
Oakland Voices generally does not “unpublish” content or remove contents such as names from our website, except for legal reasons or the possibility of harm occurring to an individual or group. We will correct and update articles when there is a significant factual error.
On a case-by-case basis, our team will review individual requests to modify published content.
Correction requests may be submitted through this form, or via email. To request a correction via email, email us at oaklandvoices at gmail dot com. For email submissions, include your first and last name, a link or URL to the story, and reason for request for correction or clarification.
Our editorial team will carefully review any potential inaccuracy before making changes to a published piece. In the event of a minor factual error, the story will be amended and the change will be noted at the bottom. Significant corrections will be noted at the top of the story or in the headline.
