Oakland Voices alumna Dera Williams will join two fellow authors for a reading and discussion at Marcus Books on Sunday, June 7.

Williams will read from her memoir, “In My Backyard: Stories of Growing Up In Oakland. “ She’ll be featured alongside La Rhonda Crosby-Johnson, author of “Natural Nia”, and Phillip Wilhite, author of “Surviving Chadwick.” Attendees can hear directly from the authors about their books, writing journeys, and stories that inspired their work.

Williams completed Oakland Voices Community Journalism Academy in 2023. While in the program, she wrote about an act of vandalism at Marcus Books. Last year, as part of our Arts & Culture team, she wrote a series about Black Panther “Cubs,” children of Black Panther Party members continuing their parents’ legacies of activism.

Williams’ memoir reflects on growing up in the 1950s and 1960s and the people and places that shaped her life.

The event takes place on Sunday from 1-3 p.m. at Marcus Books, one of the nation’s oldest independent Black bookstores, 3900 MLK Way.
