Rev. Jesse Jackson was remembered for his legacy of organizing and hope.

It is with deep sorrow and profound respect that we acknowledge the passing of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson, Sr., a towering figure in the struggle for civil rights, political empowerment, and economic justice.

A testament to faith in action

Rev. Jackson’s life was a testament to faith in action. As founder of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition and a presidential candidate who expanded the national political imagination, he challenged America to see the dignity, brilliance, and power of Black communities. His leadership helped open doors in corporate boardrooms, ballot boxes, classrooms, and corridors of power that had long been closed to us.

He understood what BWOPA has always known: that political power is not symbolic, it is structural. It is built through organizing, voter engagement, coalition-building, and relentless advocacy. His call to “keep hope alive” was not just rhetoric, it was a strategy for survival and transformation.

For Black women, Rev. Jackson’s work created space. Space for our leadership. Space for our voices. Space for our policy priorities. Space to run, win, and govern.

As we reflect on his legacy, we are reminded that movements are sustained by courage and clarity of purpose. Our work across BWOPA ONE — from civic engagement to leadership development, supporting women to run for office to fighting for health equity to economic security, stands on the shoulders of giants like him.

Call for continued action

Let us honor his life not only in words, but in continued action:

  • By organizing.
  • By voting.
  • By mentoring.
  • By building institutions.
  • By advancing policy that centers Black communities.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who were shaped by his ministry and movement.

May we remain rooted in legacy, rising together, and advancing our power.

LaNiece Jones is State President of BWOPA. Dezie Woods Jones is President Emerita.
