In response to the killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, Oakland teachers call for accountability and an immediate end to immigration enforcement that frightens children, destabilizes families, and threatens school safety.
The Oakland Educators Association condemns the killing of a civilian by an Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis and the presence of immigration enforcement on school campuses. These actions have left children frightened, families shaken, and educators deeply alarmed.
In Oakland, educators serve students from immigrant families every day, and we know that learning depends on safety, trust, and belonging. When immigration enforcement appears on or near school grounds, it spreads fear, disrupts learning, and places students and educators at risk — directly contradicting California’s commitment to schools as safe and welcoming spaces for all.
We stand in solidarity with Minnesota educators and families and demand accountability for this killing, along with an immediate end to ICE activity in and around schools. Schools must be protected as sanctuaries where every child belongs, not used as extensions of a violent immigration system.
