Hello dear Oakland Voices readers and community,
We will be taking a holiday break until January 4, 2021.
It has been quite a year. In March, we graduated the 2019 cohort of Oakland Voices and began recruiting for a new cohort, but stopped due to the new shelter-in-place order.
We pivoted to engaging our alumni members from the past 10 years of our community journalism training program. Since March, we have published close to 200 stories written by dozens of our Oakland Voices correspondents who are our alumni, as well as by us, the two Oakland Voices staff members, and a few community members as well.
We started covering COVID news regularly. We had a story go viral, that still resonates today with how COVID is disproportionately impacting our African American and Latinx communities in East Oakland.
We shared stories about wearing masks, knowing that masks are one of the key ways to prevent transmission of COVID.
In November, we launched videos about the local ballot measures in partnership with The Oaklandside and provided crucial information to our Oakland voters.
There are so many more highlights, but the biggest ones are working with our amazing group of correspondents to bring a different perspective of Oakland voices. Thank you for reading—we see you (and wish we could actually see you!).
We are immensely grateful for the Oakland community. We’ll be back with more coverage, community perspectives, and programs in 2021. Look for more news in the upcoming months.
We hope you all have a safe holiday season and hope you find moments of merriment wherever you are.
